Whiskey University Series (2 parts - Part 1 June 20th and Part 2 September 12th) Bourbon 201 is an interactive women’s in-person bourbon education experience designed to deepen your appreciation and understanding of America’s native spirit. Guests will explore the origins of whiskey and bourbon, learn the “ABC’s of Bourbon” — including aging, barrels, mash bills, proof, and tasting techniques — while discovering how regional styles and distilleries shape flavor profiles. Throughout the class, participants will enjoy guided tastings featuring a variety of flagship and premium bourbons from Kentucky’s most iconic distilleries, including flights such as Jim Beam, Knob Creek, Buffalo Trace, and Wild Turkey to name a few. Perfect for both curious beginners and bourbon enthusiasts looking to expand their palate, Bourbon 201 offers a welcoming atmosphere focused on education, flavor exploration, and connection. Light bites provided by Julep. Leading the series are whiskey educators Jill Thomas Aviles and Kim Barnette, two passionate whiskey enthusiasts whose journeys through Whiskey University and the Bourbon Brigade have quickly made them respected advocates for whiskey education and community. Jill Thomas Aviles discovered her passion for whiskey in 2024 and immediately immersed herself in the study of bourbon history, production, and tasting. Since beginning her Whiskey University journey, she has earned numerous certifications and distinctions, including Master Bourbon Taster and Master of Arts Degree credentials, along with a commission as a 1st Lieutenant in the Bourbon Brigade. A Jacksonville native with more than 28 years in financial services, Jill combines analytical insight with an engaging and approachable teaching style centered around curiosity, exploration, and connection. Kim Barnette’s whiskey journey began through friendships formed in the dance community and evolved into a deep appreciation for bourbon culture and education. Inspired by Jacksonville’s whiskey scene and the team at Julep, Kim pursued advanced whiskey studies through Whiskey University, earning multiple Master-level distinctions and currently working toward the rank of Commodore in the Bourbon Brigade. With more than four decades in healthcare and medical research, Kim brings warmth, precision, and a lifelong love of learning to every tasting experience she leads. Together, Jill and Kim create an engaging and approachable educational environment where guests can ask questions, build confidence in their palate, and enjoy discovering the world of whiskey alongside fellow Bourbon Women.
